The Many Lives of Nathan James H C Huber Books
"The Many Lives of Nathan James" is an inspired debut novel by the talented, emerging author H.C. Huber. Past and present are seamlessly interwoven in the coming-of-age story about self-discovery and the deep bonds of family and friendship. I found the title character, Nathan James, to be very well developed and I must admit that I was just as skeptical of past life regressions as he was in the beginning of the novel. But going with him on each of his regressions was surprisingly thrilling and each experience brilliantly revealed more layers of Nathan's multifaceted personality. It was fantastic and exciting to feel as though I was discovering Nathan as he was discovering himself.Huber's writing is profoundly engaging, witty, and insightful. I was especially impressed with her uncanny ability to capture the feelings and thoughts I myself have had about living in NYC as a 20-something. Early in the novel Huber reveals that moving to New York was the best decision Nathan ever made, explaining, "This is an island of outcasts: the smart ones, the dumb ones, the pretty ones, the weird ones. We’re all the same here. We all come from somewhere else looking for the same thing. We weren’t accepted where we came from, for one reason or another, so we exiled ourselves to a place where we felt safe amongst the chaos of other misfits.... This is our island. The island of the lost, but for all who dwell here, it’s the island of the found."
I was hooked from page one of Huber's brilliant novel and the ending only left me wanting more. I look forward to where Nathan's journey will take us next!
