This book of poetry is stunning, absolutely stunning, and I mean that completely literally. I sat myself down in a quiet place and read this book from cover to cover. Over and over again while I read I kept encountering moments in the poems that took my breath away. All I could do was sit for a few moments and stare at the poem I had just read, marveling. After that I had to work to collect myself in order to be able to turn the page and move on to the next poem. It is true that these poems are easily approached because they are direct, not hidden behind over-ornamentation or unnecessary complexity, but once the poems draw you in they really work you over. Though they lull the reader with an unhurried velveteen elegance, their emotional impact is intense. This is a compelling beautiful collection from a poet whom I am sure will have even more marvelous wonders to share with us in the future.Product details

"Cradling Monsoons" is a brave, challenging and sometimes startling collection, but always brilliant. McKinstry-Brown is in top form. Every syllable shines with a fine polish. When I reached the end, I gave myself a few seconds for a happy sigh, then went right back to the beginning and started over. Her poem "Farmer's Heaven" is deeply moving, and it cradles my heart every time I return to it. If you've forgotten (or never experienced) how thrilling good poetry can be, get this book.
When I think about this collection, I approach it as a father, a partner, and a writer. I think of how the book touches so much on the challenges of being a wife and mother, though I love the fact that she holds true to each one of her selves and that the husband appears and reappears as an integral part of the whole. In one of my favorite pieces, What He Brings Me" the speaker describes an evening with her husband and how he loves her, by sharing his day with her. "This is how the night breaks open/he puts his lips against mine,/and I hear ocean." Lines like these resonate throughout the book; this cutting, severing, or breaking, as well as, the desire to maintain or reconnect occurs in so many ways that it portrays the experience of loving both your art and your family. It reveals how there is always a closeness and a distance to our work, how we are able to dedicate time to it and sometimes, have to step away from it, to focus on the living.
I love how I can be a part of her journey and, in doing so, remember my own struggles and joys, while raisin my son. I love so many moments in this collection, both for their beauty and the images they evoke, but also for the mastery of craft that Sarah was able to employ in their creation. These are honest and gorgeous poems and I enjoy each time I return to Cradling Monsoons and to Sarah's work.
McKinstry-Brown writes beautiful poetry that begs to be read slowly and savored.
This collection is full of the kind of imagery writers work their whole lives to capture. McKinstry-Brown does this, all the while making the language, imagery, and themes accessible to any reader.
This is an exceptional collection exploring the complexities of early marriage and motherhood. These are poems that are as finely crafted as they are moving.
Sarah McKinstry-Brown is a witch with her words, twisting and crafting them quite beautifully and seemingly effortlessly as if by casting a spell! Her poems are gorgeous and she has such a lovely perspective on life. I take this book with me while travelling and my copy has become quite ugly from re-reading and getting shoved into my bag; I wouldn't have it any other way. I look forward to Sarah's next publication!
This is a beautiful collection of poems that explore motherhood, relationships, family--there is celebration alongside ambivalence, the complex emotions of a nurturer that we often don't like to acknowledge in the way we as a culture hold tightly onto the mythology of motherhood-as-an-erasure-of-self. Sarah reveals and examines these complexities, and in doing so, creates a deep and full exploration of love in her beautiful poems.
